At-Home Finger Prick Blood Collection Guide
Before You Start
- Ensure your kit is complete with 2 alcohol swabs, 2 cotton buds, 2 auto lancets, 2 band-aids, a pre-paid return bag, a transparent sample bag, and written instructions.
- Read through the written instructions carefully before you begin.
- Check if you need to fast or collect the sample at a particular time of day and plan accordingly.
At-Home Finger Prick Blood Collection Guide
Step 1: Prepare for Collection
- Wash your hands with warm water to increase blood flow. Dry them thoroughly.
- Select the middle or ring finger of your non-dominant hand for the blood sample.
- Warm your hands if they’re cold to further help blood flow.
Step 2: Clean the Site
Use one alcohol swab to clean your fingertip. Let it air dry without blowing on it.
Step 3: Prick Your Finger
- Take one auto lancet and twist off the cap.
- Press the lancet firmly against the side of your fingertip and activate it. You’ll feel a small pinch.
- Use a cotton bud to wipe away the first drop of blood.
Step 4: Collect the Blood
- Gently squeeze your finger to form new drops of blood.
- Allow the blood to freely drop onto the collection device or card without touching other surfaces.
Step 5: Ensure Adequate Sample Size
- Continue to gently press your finger until you’ve collected enough blood. Avoid excessive squeezing.
Step 6: Stop the Bleeding
- After collection, use a cotton bud to apply pressure to the site until the bleeding stops.
- Place a band-aid on the fingertip.
Step 7: Store the Sample
- Ensure the sample is properly secured in the transparent sample bag.
- Label the bag if required, with your details.
Step 8: Post-Collection Care
- Dispose of the used auto lancet and cotton bud safely.
- Keep the puncture site clean and watch for signs of infection
Step 9: Return Your Sample
- Activate your package via the enclosed URL or QR code within your box
- Follow activation instructions and register your barcode
- Register your Sample including date of collection
- Place the sample bag inside the pre-paid return bag as per the written instructions.
- Mail the sample promptly according to the kit instructions.
Tips for Success
- Stay relaxed to promote blood flow.
- Make sure you are hydrated by drinking plenty of water before the test.
- If you need more blood, you can use the second auto lancet on another finger.
Safety Note
- Do not reuse lancets.
- If you feel lightheaded, sit down immediately.
